In March 2023, I will participate in the YRSC skills contest for photography. I was judged based on three photographs taken before the contest and three photographs taken during the event. The photographs in the carnival are the three photographs taken at the venue (Humber College). I achieved second place in the contest.
The objects in the shot align to single out the baby Jesus from the rest of the sculpture. Jesus being at the center of the cross forebodes his destiny to be chosen by God. The fence post surrounds Jesus with protection, for he must be the light of the world as chosen by God.
"What if I could ride a beam of light across the universe?"
Although I had lived in Korea for most of my childhood, I had very little knowledge of its history. From my trip, I learned more about Korea's history, and learned about general Yishunsin. What I admired about him beyond his achievements as a general was his charismatics. He fought battles against an enemy that was stronger and more powerful, yet he persevered and triumphed. I photographed the statue in a way to match the scene to his charismatic, yet calm demeaner.
In this shot, I tried to utilize the lights from the sunset in a way that others weren't. By contrasting the darker setting of the parking lot with the bright, red view at the center, it created the feeling of enclosure or confinement.
The beauty I find in cities is its way of managing of all its elements for it to run as efficiently as possible. Every people, cars, buildings, all fit together so that their city can keep its gears turning every day. I attempted to capture that beauty in this shot.
In this photograph, I aimed to capture the captivating presence of the color green, which holds a special place in my heart for its abundance in nature, forests, and life itself. However, the vibrancy of this color often remains concealed amidst the urban sprawl and the havoc cities wreak on their surroundings, such as pollution, construction, and disorder.
During my visit to Seoul's Lotte Tower, I was taken aback by the surprising sight of green adorning the rooftops, as if attempting to imitate nature's ingenious use of this hue. It struck me as ironic, witnessing nature's essence camouflaged within a city that necessitated the destruction of its own natural elements in order to thrive.
Through this photograph, I endeavored to capture the essence of this irony—nature's concealed presence within a cityscape that paradoxically relied on nature's own demise for its existence.
